INFORMATION:
With 95% of deaf children born to hearing parents who are often unfamiliar with American Sign Language (ASL), many deaf children arrive at school already language delayed (Mitchell & Karchmer, 2004; Standley, 2005). As language acquisition in deaf children is vastly different than how hearing children acquire language (Lieberman et al.,2016), and without language access at home, deaf children experience multiple challenges prior to arriving at school. Such challenges impact their attention span (Dye et al., 2007), world knowledge (Convertino et al., 2014; Hall, 2017), memory (Hamilton, 2011), and intelligence (Simms et al., 2013). Deaf children who develop and experience these additional cognitive challenges, now face additional challenges for language acquisition (Caselli et al. 2020).
For this reason, it is critical that we understand how deaf children acquire language to ensure they do not "fall in the cracks" in their language and cognitive development.
