In chapter 7, we will investigate the basic steps of meiosis; the packaging and movement of chromosomes during this process ultimately determine how the DNA is uniquely divided among the 4 gametes or daughter cells; either egg or sperm. It is the recombination events that occur during sexual reproduction that has led directly to the tremendous biodiversity we see in our world. We will also discuss what happens when errors occur during meiosis; how do these errors occur and can we develop approaches to fix them?
- Chapter 7: The Cellular Basis of Inheritence
In chapter 8, we investigate the experiments of Gregor Mendel; his work in the 1860s led to our basic understanding of inheritance or how genetic information is passed from one generation to the next. We will explore these laws of inheritance, including the exceptions that exist and impact the health of many species, including humans.
