1 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
Introduction
As per the opinion of Nguyen, Harris and Ng (2019), knowledge of leadership is
effective for teachers to improve their educational practices. Not only leadership but also
management has a major role in the present regard to facilitating the educational scenario
focussing on early childhood education. In this context, as commented by Rodd (2013),
“understanding leadership in early childhood has been plagued by its confusion with the
concept of management ”.This issue or confusion is occurring due to the interconnectedness
between the leadership and management concepts relating to the educational scenario. The
present study will evaluate different leadership theories and models to understand the
interconnectedness involving the roles and required skills for aleader and manager from the
viewpoint of early childhood education. Further, the major issues in the present context are
highlighted in the present study. The present paper has also focused on making clear
distinctions between the roles of the leader and manager while handling early childhood
education. Further, the managerial perspective engaged in education has been described by
the present study to attract aclear understanding through performing the present essay.
Definition of leadership
An educational leader is able to create apositive environment in the class to facilitate
the learning experiences (Rodd, 2013). The role of the educational leader is to offer ahigh
standard of early childhood education. Successful implementation of the NQF in early
childhood education is effective in describing the leaders’ role in the present regard (Marshall,
2018). Further, ECGC policy has admitted the role of educational leaders especially focusing
on the educators in the day-care centre to empower early childhood education (Marshall,
2018). The role of the educational leader is further involved in setting goals, objectives,
strategies, and policy-making to facilitate childhood development through the educational
values in early childhood education. As discussed by Mooney (2021), the role of a leader
2 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
further engages own values and style of practices to attract better success in facilitating early
childhood education. Further, the role of an educational leader is involved with the change
adoption concentrating on changing scenarios by engaging in effective communication with
the stakeholders involved in the process.
Definition of management
As per the vision of Goldbach, Soare and Ionescu (2018), educational management
engages acomplex approach involving all resources available in an educational organization.
The manager’s role differs from the educational leader â€srole in terms of having adetailed
approach focussing on the organizational components. Leadership is required in solving a
specific issue in the organization whereas the management needs to evaluate the scenario as a
whole. The role of the educational manager is to control the strategies and outcomes while
facilitating early childhood education. As opined by do Nascimento and Chiusoli (2019), the
role of the manager in the educational perspective is engaged with directing the educational
institute to attract better outcomes. Further, the analysing skills, communication skills, and
collaborative abilities are crucial for the educational managers in empowering early
childhood education.
Theoretical approaches for leadership and management
Behavioural theory
Behavioural management theories such as McGregor â€stheory, and trait theory are
engaged with human relations in terms of resolving the issues related to motivation,
expectation, dynamics, and conflicts related to the educational field of early childhood
education. The learning management system is shaped by the leader in the present regard to
meet the changing needs of the children in changing external environment (Raza et al., 2021).
In this context, the manager will evaluate, analyse, monitor, and direct the process to attract
3 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
better effectiveness for early childhood education. The behaviours of the students are
evaluated to understand their changing needs in the present regard.
Contingency theory
As opined by Safari and Saleh (2020), contingency theory focuses on the resource
view while managing the educational process in an organization. Internal and external, both
the environmental changes matter in this kind of management style. As educational
performances are engaged with the leadership features, the leaders have asignificant role in
implementing the present theory to facilitate early childhood education. The leader â€srole
here is to focus on the individual interest of the children during task orientation. Further the
manager will evaluate the success of the implementation of the theory in making the
curriculum framework to attract maximum developmental impacts for the children.
Situational theory
As described by Raza and Sikandar (2018), the situational leadership model proposed
by Hersey and Blanchard is helpful to increase the performance of a teacher to fulfill the
educational purpose. The leader’s role in this regard is to observe the situation and take
initiatives accordingly to empower the educational system (Raza & Sikandar, 2018). The
manager role in this regard is to ensure the behaviour of the leader engaging the readiness
level of the teachers in the present regard. Further described by the study, proper
implementation of this model is essential to attract better educational performances.
Jim Collin â€s2001 level 5leadership model
As elaborated by Beard (2019), in the age of enhanced criticism and accountability in
the educational context, this model is effective to attract better leadership efficiency in
educational performances. Carrer development of the leaders in the present scenario is
effective to facilitate early childhood education. The role of the manager in this regard to
supervise the entire process to attract better outcomes through the educational initiatives. It is
4 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
further effective to address the educational issues related to the fund challenges, motivation
of the children, teacher quality involving training and retention (Beard, 2019).
Maxwell â€s5levels of leadership
Maxwell also focuses on leadership development to attract better effectiveness in
early childhood education in astructured way compared to Collin â€smodel. In the explanation
of Alinsunurin (2020), the quality of school life is ensured by the effective leadership
engaged in the educational scenario. The framework proposed by Maxwell emphasizes the
skills, vision, and competence to empower early childhood education by engaging in better
care. It further considers the position, permission, production, people development, and
pinnacle engaged with early childhood education. Better leadership abilities are effective to
recognise the childhood development need while developing the curriculum to foster better
childhood development.
Robert Katz â€sthree skill approach
As stated by Ali et al. (2021), askill-based approach was introduced by Robert Katz
to facilitate leaders with better effectiveness. Technical skills, human relations, and
conceptual skills are encouraged in the present model to facilitate the leaders to empower the
educational context. As per the opinion of Mohammed, Edu and Etoh (2020), better academic
performances of the students are fostered by the increased leadership effectiveness of the
teachers and principals of the school. The administrative skills of the educational leader are
equally important in the present context.
Bureaucracy approach
According to Balikci and Aypay (2018), bureaucratic management impacts the
schools, teachers, staff, and associated people in an educational structure. It is further related
to the managerial structure present in an educational institute. It is further focusing on the
control and command while managing an educational structure in an institute. Further, it
5 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
offers the leaders to perform with the flexibility to attract desired educational outcomes in the
present scenario. Thus, the bureaucratic managerial structure is effective to attract better
efficiency in facilitating child development through early childhood education. It further
accepts ashare of information from top management toward down.
Issue 1: Change management issues
Continuously changing the external and internal environment for the educational
scenario has impacted the leadership and managerial context in the present regard. As
discussed by Mishra, Gupta and Shree (2020), Covid pandemic has changed the educational
scenario by engaging the online teaching-learning system in the educational structure. The
goal-orientation nature of the educational leaders is needed to be attracted in the present
regard to managing the changes in early childhood education (Educationmattersmag.com.au,
2022). As the concept of childhood development is continuously shifting, the leaders need to
engage in better vision. The skills of the educational leader such as empathy, communication,
active listening, perseverance, are needed to be ensured while performing the change by
attracting the appropriate leadership style by engaging autocratic or situational theories .The
pedagogical knowledge of the manager will further attract better outcomes by avoiding the
potential risks engaged with the change while evaluating the success of the change to ensure
better educational initiatives to empower early childhood education.
Issue 2: Conflict management issues
It is previously mentioned that a complex approach is engaged with educational
management. Thus, it is significant to manage the conflicts in the present scenario to extract
maximum outcomes to enhance early childhood educational effectiveness. As described by
Shaturaev and Bekimbetova (2021), the personality traits and sense-making capability of the
educational leader plays amajor role in resolving the complex issue. Further, the conflicts
with NQS while planning for the curriculum to facilitate early childhood education is
6 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
engaged with the scenario. These are needed to be solved by focussing on the leadership
effectiveness in the educational structure focusing on the early childhood education. Further,
the managerial issue in the present context is regarding coordinating and collaborating with
all departments present in the educational institutes. Further, it is involved with the readiness
of the children as well as the parents while resolving the conflicts to attract better
effectiveness in early childhood education. Collaborative theoretical approach is crucial in the
present regard to perform conflict management.
Issue 3: Issues regarding motivating children
As opined by Fons énand Nicholson et al. (2020), leadership is encouraged in the field
of educational practices to attract better effectiveness in the process. In the present regard,
educational management is not able to motivate the children for the changes to attract better
developmental attributes by the curriculum framework compared with educational leadership
approaches. The educational leaders are needed to motivate the students on aregular basis to
attract maximum benefits by the change management in the educational structure to facilitate
early childhood education. It is further engaged with the motivation of other employees
engaged with the educational process to facilitate a better early childhood education to
support childhood development.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be said that educational management and leadership are
interrelated. However, both are enriched with their own effectiveness to facilitate early
childhood education. Further, it is summarised that different educational participants have a
tendency to confuse both concepts. It is analyzed that the educational managers are involved
with supervising and evaluating the entire process whereas the educational leaders are
engaged in identifying and performing the educational strategies to facilitate early childhood
education. The leadership and management model has been incorporated to reach the
7 EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT
conclusion regarding the roles of leaders and managers in the present scenario. The concept
of management and leadership from the educational context has been entitled to the present
essay by specifying the roles and responsibilities. Further, the issues such as change
management, conflict management and motivating the people are discussed to identify the
greater roles of the educational leaders especially focusing on early childhood education. The
leadership and management role in planning the curriculum to support childhood
development through education has been further emphasized in the study.
