▪ 3 or 4 examples of your inner conversation

Think Aloud Protocol
Course Outcome Fulfilled:
Description: As you engage in the reading process of various texts in different subject areas, you will monitor
your inner conversations (doing a “think aloud” silently). You may write in the text or use Post-its to hold
your thinking. Record/note your mental thinking in the text or on Post-its. Become metacognitive about the
strategies you use to make sense and understand the text. You will engage in a metacognitive conversation
where you will explore your thinking about each reading.
In particular, you will describe your learning experience while considering:
a) How did your background knowledge and your attitude toward each text affect your reading?
b) What did you bring to the situation that influenced how you read each text?
c) What strategies were you aware of using to help you comprehend each of the readings?
d) What characteristics of the text, or text features, helped or hindered your reading of each text?
e) What “fix-up” strategies did you need to apply to understand?
Then you will type a response paper regarding this activity. Please address the following in your paper:
a) What did you learn about reading in your own subject area?
b) What did you learn about reading outside your subject area? Were there certain strategies that
were more helpful than others?
c) What occurred in your inner conversation while you were reading? Provide 3 or 4 examples.
d) How will you use the think aloud strategy to help students make meaning from texts you assign?
e) How was your experience with this activity similar to or different from what you might imagine
an English Language Learner experiences when faced with classroom text.
